AirPods reportedly reaching the end of their product cycle in March

A report from Spanish website AppleSfera claims that its sources tell about a March 29 launch date for the second-generation Apple AirPods. Apple's AirPods received lots of mixed criticism when they were first announced, including looking outright ridiculous while wearing them. Around two years later, they are a best-selling Apple product at Best Buy as iPhone users struggle with losing or breaking their headphone dongles. The AirPods are due for a refresh and a screenshot allegedly from a stock warehouse in the Asia-Pacific market labels the AirPods to have an "Out of Stock" date...

Xfinity Mobile used ‘0000' as default account PIN and customers were exposed to hacks

Xfinity Mobile is an MVNO carrier that runs on both Verizon's LTE networks and seamlessly connects to Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots around the US when in range. The network has some customers left stranded with their phone numbers stolen by attackers who then used the numbers to commit identity fraud. The issue stemmed from Xfinity Mobile irresponsibly setting account PIN numbers to a default "0000". In the US, this PIN is given to a new phone company along with basic account information in order to permanently transfer the number to a new provider. We're aware of a very small number of...

Huawei CEO says Samsung Galaxy Fold's design is bad

Huawei's Mate X and Samsung's Galaxy Fold were undoubtedly the kings of MWC in Barcelona this week, as after many years of anxious anticipation and hype foldable phones finally seem to have arrived. The two employ very different designs however, and it's pretty clear which one Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's mobile business, prefers. He revealed to Business Insider that his company was at one point working on three different foldable phone projects simultaneously, one of which looked very similar to Samsung's Galaxy Fold but was somehow "even better than that", in Yu's words. However, he...

Galaxy S10 ships with pre-applied screen protector that has a three-month warranty

In the past few weeks there's been a lot of talk about Samsung's Galaxy S10 and S10+ and how they would be able to handle screen protectors given the ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor they employ, which hasn't been seen in another device yet. The scanner's tech means not all plastic or glass screen protectors will allow you to authenticate in this way, which is obviously a complicating factor for would-be S10 owners. Thankfully, though, Samsung is taking a step in helping them with an unprecedented move - it's going to ship the phones with a pre-applied screen protector. The...

Samsung to allow swapping Bixby in ‘Hi Bixby’ hotword with other words?

Now that we have the option to remap the dedicated Bixby key on our Galaxy phones, Samsung could be planning to give us the option to customize the ‘Hi Bixby’ wake-up command for Bixby Voice. Well, at least in China, where the company has apparently announced that Samsung will swap the Bixby in ‘Hi Bixby’ with a word of their choice.

There are no more details available yet, but Twitter leakster Ice universe says you could say ‘Hi IceCat’ instead of ‘Hi Bixby’, so we’re assuming users will a free hand at choosing any word they’d like. The ‘Hi’ part of the command will probably stay as it is, but letting people set up custom wake-up commands would take Bixby Voice a step ahead of Google Now. Google currently allows one to say ‘Hey Google’ or ‘Ok Google’ to use the Google Assistant.

It remains to be seen if the Bixby hotword customization will be come to devices other than the S10 and in countries outside China. If it does, what’s the word you’d use to access Bixby Voice? If you set it to ‘Hi SamMobile’ and give us some free publicity when you’re out and about in a crowd and need to ask Bixby something, we promise we won’t complain.

With Android Pie, Bixby Voice no longer needs a physical key

When the Galaxy Tab S4 went official, Samsung told us that the tablet would have support for Bixby Voice. That was well and good until we realized the Tab S4 had no physical Bixby key, which is required for Bixby Voice access on a Galaxy device. Samsung told us Bixby Voice would come with an update to the Tab S4 in 2019, and it turns out it’s the Android Pie update that the company was talking about.

Long press power key for Bixby Voice, double press for camera

On the new Galaxy A50, which comes with Pie out of the box, you can talk to Bixby by long pressing the power button to bring up Bixby Voice. It’s not enabled by default, but the phone asks you if you want to assign a long press of the power key to Bixby Voice the first time you access the power menu. A shortcut to Bixby gets added to the home screen so you can access the main Bixby app, and the phone also puts the power menu options in the status bar once you map Bixby Voice to the power button so you can restart/power off the device.

This is a good step towards making Bixby Voice more widely available across the Galaxy lineup, and it should help Samsung improve its voice assistant faster than it would have if only flagships and a few select mid-range devices would continue to get a dedicated physical key (which can be remapped on existing devices now). However, Samsung may not be putting Bixby Voice on every new phone that comes with Pie out of the box, as the Galaxy A30 doesn’t have it. It may have something to do with the device’s specs, but we can’t be sure at this point.

[Poll] A week later, what do you think about the Galaxy Fold?

It has been a week since Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold at its Unpacked event in San Francisco. The much-awaited device will go on sale on April 26 for $1,980 in select markets. So far, the company hasn’t allowed the press to play with the device, thereby leaving many questions unanswered. However, quite a bit of information about the Galaxy Fold has emerged online in the last few days, including a four-minute video from Samsung which gave us the closest look at the device so far.

Since the Galaxy Fold announcement, a lot has happened in the smartphone market. Companies like Huawei, Oppo, and TCL showed us their vision for foldable smartphones at the MWC. None of them, however, are going to hit the market anytime soon, leaving the Galaxy Fold as the only foldable smartphone that customers can actually buy. Taking all this into account, we are curious what our readers think about the Galaxy Fold a week after its announcement.

Vote in the poll below and then let us know more about your thoughts on the Galaxy Fold down in the comments section!

After launching the online-exclusive Galaxy M series, Samsung is now focusing on the offline market in India by launching new Galaxy A series smartphones. In line with all the previous reports, the company has announced the Galaxy A10, A30, and A50 in the country today. Of these three models, the Galaxy A30 and A50 already made their debut at the MWC in Barcelona last week. Other specs include a 6.4-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, triple cameras on the back, Exynos 9610 chipset, 4GB/6GB of RAM, 4,000mAh battery, and Android 9 Pie with One UI. Samsung brings Bixby key remapping to older flagships

We reported last week that Samsung had finally struck a compromise by allowing Galaxy S10 users to remap the Bixby key to launch a third-party app. Since this is a software feature, there was a possibility that Samsung would bring it to older devices.

It’s not waiting for the Galaxy S10 to come out to do that. Samsung has rolled out an update for the Bixby app today which allows users to remap the Bixby key on the Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S9/S9+ and the Galaxy S8/S8+.

Remap Bixby key on older flagships

Once the update is installed from the Galaxy Store, just go to Advanced features in the Settings app followed by Bixby key. You will be presented with two options. You can either set a third-party app to launch with a single or double press of the key.

The caveat here is that you can only select one option. So either a single or double press can be remapped, not both. The option you don’t select will continue to launch Bixby Home. A long press will always bring up Bixby Voice.

This compromise means that users don’t just disable the Bixby key entirely and never open Bixby Home. By allowing them to remap a key press, Samsung is ensuring that Bixby Home doesn’t get shut out by users for good.

You can try this out for yourself on the Galaxy Note 9, Note 8, Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S8 series. We have and the feature works as expected.

Samsung releases Android Pie beta for Galaxy A6 (2018) in Korea

Now that Samsung has released the Android Pie update, either in beta or stable form, for its flagship devices, it is shifting its focus to bring the same to many of its newer midrange devices. Last week, the company kickstarted the Android Pie beta program for the Galaxy A7 (2018) users in India. It is now bringing the same update to the Galaxy A6 (2018) customers in Korea.

Predictably, the Pie update also brings Samsung’s new One UI to the A6. Unfortunately, from the screenshot we received, we can’t tell if the update also brings the latest February security to the device. You can read our posts about the Android Pie and One UI to know what the latest Android version update from Samsung brings to the table.

Unlike stable updates, beta software doesn’t roll out automatically to users and requires enrolling into a beta program. To do so (process may vary depending on the region), open the Samsung Members app and navigate to the Notices section. If the beta program is available for your device, you will see a notice for the same. Opening the notice provides a Register button to enroll in the beta program. Once successfully registered, launch the Settings app, open the Software update menu and then tap the Download updates manually option to receive the beta update.

Before enrolling into the beta program, it is worth remembering that beta software by nature may contain bugs and other issues which may impact your daily use of the device. It takes anywhere from weeks to months for the update to move from the beta to the stable channel.

Support page confirms approaching Samsung Galaxy A40 launch in Europe

Samsung has now announced the Galaxy A10, A30 and A50 in several countries, and shown of the latter two during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. But more models in the A series are nearing release, with the Galaxy A40 possibly leading the next wave of A series devices.

Galaxy A40 coming to Europe

On Samsung’s German website, the first Galaxy A40 support page confirms our earlier reports about the device coming to, amongst others, that country. Despite the fact its existence has been known for quite some time, not many details about the A40 have so far emerged. Aside from a handful of basic specifications – Exynos 7885, 4GB RAM, Android 9 – we do not know much about its display size, nor about the cameras, fingerprint sensor or battery.

samsung galaxy a40 support germany

One thing that the few known tidbits do make clear, is that the Galaxy A40 will sit just a step below the A50 in Samsung’s new mid-range line-up. Therefore, we do expect it to come with a European price tag that is even friendlier than that of the Galaxy A50 which will initially sell for €349.

Release-wise, we expect the Galaxy A40 to hit stores across Europe sometime this spring, possibly together with a few more phones in the same series. After all, we know the Galaxy A20 and A70, too, are on their way to various markets, as well as a Galaxy A90. It is safe to say Samsung is serious about its offensive to (re)conquer the globe’s affordable smartphone markets.

For now, do not forget to check out our hands-on preview of the already-launched Galaxy A30 and A50.

A new rumor claims that the Galaxy A90 camera will be mounted on the slider and that it would be possible to rotate it. This would mean that the device won’t need separate cameras on the front and back. One camera system, be it dual or triple, would suffice.

There was a slightly different rumor with regards to this device’s camera three weeks ago. It claimed that the Galaxy A90 would have a pop-up camera with a no-notch display. The latest rumored system would allow for a display with no notches as well but the rotating mechanism is not something that is as yet a done deal.

We have already exclusively confirmed the color and storage details for the Galaxy A90. Additional details will emerge in the coming weeks. It will be interesting to see how these camera-related rumors pan out. It’s safe to say that Samsung would be doing something unique with this device’s camera.

Samsung launches the Galaxy M30 in India

After the successful launch of the Galaxy M10 and M20 in India, Samsung is expanding its M series portfolio by launching the Galaxy M30 in the country. As the model number suggests, the M30 sits above the Galaxy M20 in Samsung’s new online-exclusive budget lineup. It boasts slightly better specs than the M20 and accordingly comes at a higher price as well.

The Galaxy M30 comes with a 6.4-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, Exynos 7904 SoC, a fingerprint reader on the back, 5,000mAh battery with support for fast charging, and Android 8.1 Oreo with Samsung Experience 9.5 UI on top. On the back, it sports a triple-camera setup with a 13-megapixel primary camera, 5-megapixel depth sensor, and a 5-megapixel wide-angle lens. There is also a 16-megapixel selfie camera with Live Focus support. The device will be available in 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB storage variants. As evident from the specs, the Galaxy M30 is essentially an M20 with a Super AMOLED display, more storage, and a triple-camera setup.

The Galaxy M30 will go on sale in India on Amazon.in and Samsung eStore at 12 PM IST on March 7. It will be available in Gradation Black and Gradation Blue color options. The base 4GB/64GB variant is priced at INR 14,990 (~$210), while the higher-end variant costs INR 17,990 (~$250). Those are extremely aggressive price points for what Samsung is offering and are bound to attract a lot of buyers in the world’s second largest smartphone market.

Possible Huawei P30 Pro camera samples posted by company's product manager

Bruce Lee - no, not the actor, the Product Manager at Huawei - posted four photos of a new 5G cell tower near the MWC venue in Barcelona. The cell tower was set up by Huawei and Vodafone, but the photos are much more interesting than the tower itself. There's speculation that the photos were taken with a Huawei P30 Pro. The vanilla Huawei P30 is expected to get the triple camera of the Mate 20 Pro while the P30 Pro should have a new quad camera. They go from what appears to be an ultra-wide angle shot to a zoomed in view (the last image almost certainly uses digital zoom)....

The name of the new USB standard changes to USB 3.2 Gen 2x2

The tech industry has a chronic problem when it comes to naming things - it goes from confusing to outright . This brings us to USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. The standard was announced in 2017 but this change in branding is a new plot twist. USB 3.1 is no more, just like USB 3.0 doesn't exist. Instead there's USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps, formerly USB 3.0), USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps, USB 3.1 originally) and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. So not only is the USB-IF erasing the names of the old standards from existence, it can't even count up to 3 without getting weird. Okay, in some ways it makes sense. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is "Gen...

Samsung executive hypes Galaxy Fold’s UX and multitasking capabilities

After years of buildup, Samsung finally launched the much-awaited foldable smartphone, Galaxy Fold, at it its Unpacked event in San Francisco last week. Despite announcing the price and availability, the company, however, didn’t allow the press to play with the device to realize how it feels and works. As the curiosity about the device continues, the company has been posting bits and pieces of new information to keep the hype intact.

A few days back, the Korean company quietly released (now taken down) a four-minute video of the Galaxy Fold on its YouTube channel, giving us the most detailed look at the device so far. Continuing the hype, Samsung Newsroom has now posted an interview of Eui-suk Chung, Executive VP and Head of Software and AI at Samsung Mobile, where he talks about Galaxy Fold’s UX and multitasking capabilities. Frankly, nothing substantially new about the Galaxy Fold is mentioned in the interview, but there are some interesting bits about third-party app support for App Continuity and Multi-Active Window features.

To a question about if all apps support App Continuity and Multi-Active Window, the Samsung executive is rather cautious in his answer. While saying that the company has worked closely with Google and other partners, he added, “Support for App Continuity and Multi-Active Window will vary based on the application and the developer’s adherence with Google policies and guidelines.” From his statement, it appears some apps may support these features better than others.

Talking about the development of Galaxy Fold, Eui-suk Chung said that it took eight years for the company to turn the flexible display prototypes from 2011 into a meaningful product. He also said, with the introduction of the Galaxy Fold, ‘roll-able’ and ‘stretch-able’ device designs no longer seem impossible.

Galaxy Fold supports App Continuity and Multi-Active Window

The interview is accompanied by an illustration video where Samsung shows how the Galaxy Fold’s App Continuity and Multi-Active Window features work and how they are useful. The appeal of the Fold’s software is in, what Samsung calls, App Continuity. Simply put, App Continuity transfers an active app on the cover display to the main display when the Galaxy Fold is opened. Similarly, an active app on the main display transitions seamlessly to the cover display when the Fold is closed, enabling frictionless movement of activities from one display to the other.

Multi-Active Window, on the other hand, as the name suggests, allows Fold users to run up to three apps simultaneously on the main screen. That’s one app more than what’s currently allowed on Galaxy smartphones.

It is worth nothing Samsung is a bit ingenious when it comes to the cover display size in the video. The actual size of the outer display is smaller than what the video tries to portray.

Not all Galaxy S10 models will ship on March 8

Samsung has launched three different variants of a Galaxy S flagship for the first time. There are multiple configurations available for the handsets but not all of them will be available for purchase on March 8. That’s when pre-order customers start receiving their orders.

The same holds true for customers who have pre-ordered their Galaxy S10. Samsung won’t be shipping out all of the units on March 8 in the United States. Those who opted for certain models will have wait for a bit longer before Samsung sends them out.

Some Galaxy S10 models will be shipped later in the month

Samsung’s official US website mentions that the unlocked and carrier-locked variants of the 128GB Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ will ship between the week of March 15 and March 22, depending on the color chosen by the customer. This would mean that these models may not be readily available from stores come March 8 as well.

The models that will be immediately available on March 8 in the United States include the 512GB Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and the 1TB Galaxy S10+. Same goes for the Galaxy S10e, regardless of the color chosen. The staggered release for certain configurations will likely be seen in other markets as well. We already know that the Ceramic White finish won’t be shipped in the Netherlands before March 22.

It’s Official: You can now remap the Bixby key on the Galaxy S10+

The first software update for the Samsung Galaxy S10+, which will be waiting for customers to install as soon as they take their handset out of the box on March 8, introduces the option to remap the Bixby button to launch an aftermarket application or execute a Quick Command.

It also enables Instagram Mode.

Let’s talk remapping, and Instagram Mode

You can either choose to reconfigure the device to open an application on either a short or a double-press of the Bixby button, with the unassigned toggle reverting to pulling up Bixby Home. You can’t, however, alter the long-press function, which will continue to launch Bixby Voice.

The release also enables Instagram Mode, a unique tool that lets users capture and upload content to Instagram Stories from the handset’s native Camera client. The feature delivers the best Instagram experience, offering uploads in the highest supported resolution, according to Samsung’s DJ Koh.

As it stands, the number of people who are able to take advantage of the new additions is a smidgen compared to what it will be next month and that’s because the Galaxy S10+ is currently in the hands of a select few, ahead of its official release for the mass market on March 8.
