Realme C3 will be the first smartphone to run Realme UI out of the box

The Realme C3 is coming on February 6 but the company has already revealed most of its specifications. Now, Realme has announced that Realme C3 will boot Realme UI, making it the first Realme smartphone to run the company's newest Android 10-based skin out of the box. The Realme C3 is an entry-level smartphone, having the recently announced Helio G70 SoC at the helm. It will arrive in two memory configurations (3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB) and sport a 6.5" waterdrop notch display, having a screen-to-body ratio of 89.8%. For photography, the Realme C3 will come with three cameras - one on...

Samsung trademarks "UTG", could mean Ultra Thin Glass for Z Flip and future Samsung foldables

Foldable smartphones are certainly gaining a lot of attention as the new form factor challenges smartphone design as we know it. While we saw foldable smartphones and displays over the last year or so, they were all made with fragile plastic lenses atop the display panels. These are very easy to scratch and can easily cause damage to an otherwise expensive device. Rumors suggested that Samsung's upcoming Z Flip smartphone will use a new ultra-thin type of glass. The latest report from LetsGoDigital suggests a new patent from Samsung's lawyers submitted to the EUIPO (European Union...

FCC writes letter to Congress finding that "one or more" US carriers sold customer location data

Over a year and a half ago, each of the four major US carriers was in some way involved with an incident that revealed how carriers were selling location data of its subscribers to whoever wanted to pay for them. It involved a couple of "middle men" companies who could eventually sell location data to whoever wanted to buy it. It eventually involved Securus, a prison company that used carrier information to track phones without owners' permission. On Friday, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai sent a letter to key members of Congress, declaring that the FCC has conducted its investigation and concluded...

Samsung trademarks "Super ISO" for use with the Galaxy S20 phones

Samsung has filed a request to trademark "Super ISO" with the UK Intellectual Property Office. According to Ice Universe this will be featured on the upcoming Galaxy S20 phones. "ISO" here refers to the light sensitivity of the camera - if you've ever played with manual mode on a camera, you'll know that darker scenes require higher ISO. The problem with that is that higher ISO equals higher noise, which is probably what this feature is about. The description of the trademark says that this relates to camera hardware and the image processing software. In short, this is probably a new...

IDC: Tablet sales dropped by 0.6% in Q4 2019, Apple still leads

After a slight upheave during the Q3 period, worldwide tablet sales have yet again declined in the fourth quarter of 2019. According to the latest IDC report, the tablet market is down by 0.6% year over year as a total of 43.5 million units were shipped during the October-December period. Unsurprisingly, Apple is still the runaway leader as it managed to sell an estimated 15.9 million units in Q4 2019. Samsung with 7 million and Huawei with 4 million round our the top three. Amazon saw a steep decline of 29% compared to Q4 2018 with just 3.3 million shipments this time around while...

Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite prices, availability for Malaysia confirmed

Pricing and availability details for the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite in Malaysia have now been confirmed ahead of an imminent release. The Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite will cost RM 2,699 ($658) and RM 2,299 ($560), respectively, and they will be available for purchase in the company’s offline and online stores, as well as online through retail partners including Shopee, Lazada, and PrestoMall.

The two new smartphones are listed on Samsung’s official website in Malaysia but they are not yet available for order through the aforementioned retail channels. However, the official launch announcement has been made, these partners have been confirmed, and the devices should arrive in stock at any moment.

The Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite offer high-end characteristics on a budget

The Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite are quite unusual devices by Samsung’s standards. They were introduced outside of the yearly Galaxy S and Note launch timeframes, and as mentioned in our S10 Lite hands-on story, they aim to bring flagship-grade specs and the S Pen down to a more affordable price point. They make use of Samsung’s new design language characterized by large rectangular camera humps.

Both smartphone models include features such as a 6.7-inch Infinity-O Super AMOLED HDR display, identical 32MP front-facing cameras, a 4,500mAh battery, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Are you going to buy the Galaxy S10 Lite or Note 10 Lite in Malaysia or elsewhere? Which one of these two unconventional smartphones do you think makes for a better pick, and why? Share your thoughts below.

Latest Galaxy S20 leak shows just how much the cameras will stick out

There’s little we don’t know any more about the upcoming Galaxy S20 series since almost everything has been leaked. We’ll continue to see such leaks before Samsung officially unveils the devices on February 11.

A newly leaked image is making the rounds on Twitter in which you can see all three Galaxy S20 models lined up together. Some bits are blurred in this image but you can get a pretty good idea of the size difference between these models.

This is the latest in the endless series of Galaxy S20 leaks

The leaks so far have revealed that the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra will feature a 6.2-inch, 6.7-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively. Naturally, there’s going to be a size difference between all of these models. All three models appear to sport the Cosmic Black color.

Even though the camera setup on all models is blurred, we can get a sense of just how much it’s going to protrude from the case. This leaked image provides a better sense of that compared to the renders that have been leaked online so far. Evidently, it’s going to stick out noticeably, particularly on the Galaxy S20 Ultra. We’ll be sure to do a wobble test laying these devices on a flat surface when they come in for the review.

Despite all of the stickers at the back suggesting that these might be real units, there’s no way to confirm the authenticity of this image which is floating around on Twitter. For all we know, it could be an elaborate fake with some dummy units of the Galaxy S20, there are plenty of those out already.

The wait is set to end soon for Samsung fans that have been waiting for the Galaxy S20 series. Samsung is going to unveil it on February 11 at an event in San Francisco. It’s expected to release the Galaxy S20 on March 6.

The European Parliament votes in favor of a common charger despite Apple's protests

Members of European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of a common charger, the resolution passed with 582-40. It urges the European Commission to adopt new rules by July that would make it so buyers don't necessarily get a new charger with each new device. A decade ago, the EU got major phone makers (among which Apple) to voluntarily move towards a common standard. Now MEPs believe that the voluntary approach has not worked out and new legislation needs to be passed. The resolution highlights wireless chargers as a way to reduce electronic waste, but notes that the rules written...

Samsung Global Goals updated with new payment methods, more features

Samsung’s Global Goals app is going to improve with new features by the end of the month. The company is updating the app with support for more payment options, new inspirational lock screen wallpapers, and several UX changes such as streamlined notifications and Facts and Figures on each Goal.

In addition to these changes, Samsung Global Goals is getting an exclusive feature in South Korea, allowing customers there to learn about the Korean Sustainable Development Goals directly through the Global Goals app.

Users will be able to donate via Samsung Pay and Google Pay

Ever since Global Goals was introduced alongside the Galaxy Note 10 series, users have been able to watch ads on their smart devices to support various causes around the globe by donating 100% of the ad’s revenue. With the latest update, Global Goals users will be able to donate additional money to support causes directly, either through Samsung Pay or Google Pay. Payments will be faster thanks to biometric authentication, making it easier for people around the world to donate and support charities.

To make Global Goals that much better, Samsung also recently announced that 100% of ad revenue generated by users watching ads will be matched by itself. In other words, 200% of ad revenue from Global Goals will be donated by Samsung to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

New inspiring lock screen wallpapers and Charge Screen ads

New lock screen wallpapers featuring inspirational quotes and visuals are also being added as part of the latest Global Goals update. More so, the existing ‘Charge Screen ads’ feature is going to prompt new users to join the platform whenever they plug in to charge their phones. These prompts can be disabled through a new toggle in the Global Goals Donate tab.

Samsung Global Goals is a great app that lets users support charitable causes around the world by doing nothing more than watching a few seconds of ads. With the addition of new payment methods for donations and new ways of supporting causes through ads, Samsung is doing a fantastic job of making it even easier for its customers to contribute.

La Liga brings its free OTT platform to Samsung smart TVs worldwide

Soccer fans and Samsung smart TV owners are in for a treat. Samsung has entered a new partnership with the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional, known as La Liga for short, and through this deal, the sports-centric LaLigaSportsTV over-the-top (OTT) streaming service will become available for free to all Samsung smart TV owners around the world.

LaLigaSportsTV streams soccer events from La Liga and Secunda División, but it is not limited to this particular sport. In fact, the platform covers more than 30 sports ranging from ASOBAL Handball and matches from Spain’s second-tier basketball division to badminton and weightlifting.

LaLigaSportsTV has around 600,000 registered users

Soccer is a big deal in Europe, obviously, and LaLigaSportsTV is a fast-growing OTT platform. It had 300,000 registered users in September and it doubled that figure in just four months. Samsung is now welcoming all of these users and La Liga fans into its own ecosystem and TV platform.

The launch of LaLigaSportsTV on Samsung’s smart TVs stands as proof of the company’s continuous support to deliver richer content to customers at no additional costs. Samsung TV Plus already offers a lot of free content as it is, and it was only last month when the platform welcomed ESTV into its list of free channels.

Galaxy S20 series to cost roughly the same as the S10 in Europe

With the number of leaks and rumors flying around lately, there seems to be very little about the Galaxy S20 series that we don’t know. Pricing is one of those details that remain subject to change, but earlier today, Polish online publication Tabletowo claimed to have found out all about the costs of acquiring the upcoming Galaxy S20 models.

The Galaxy S20 will cost the equivalent of €812 and it will launch in blue, pink, and gray, at least in Poland and other European countries, according to the source.

The Galaxy S20+ and S20+ 5G will cost €1,023 and €1,128, respectively, and they will both be available in black, blue, and gray. Last but certainly not least, the variant sitting at the top of the range – the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G – will carry a launch price of €1,395 in Poland where it will hit the shelves in black and gray. You can check these renders for a better look at how these colors fit Samsung’s new flagships.

Once again, the Galaxy S20 series costs about the same as the S10

Although they are not officially confirmed, these prices mentioned today seem similar to the ones brought up by other sources last week. And once again, they are about the same as the Galaxy S10 launch prices in Poland last year. Well, as long as we ignore the Galaxy S10e which doesn’t quite have a direct sequel this year.

The Galaxy S20 will have a starting price identical to the Galaxy S10, and the same goes for the Galaxy S20+ and S10+. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G has a lower launch price – by around €230 – compared to the ceramic Galaxy S10+.

Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S20 lineup at Unpacked on February 11, and according to the company’s reservation policy, the flagship should ship to customers beginning March 6.

Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy Note 9 receive February 2020 security patch

Samsung has become quite proactive these days in rolling out new security patches for its devices even before Google puts up the release notes. We have seen the company do this consistently over the past few weeks.

Having already released the patch for the Galaxy Tab S3 this week, Samsung today started rolling out the February 2020 security patch for the Galaxy Note 10+ and the Galaxy Note 9.

February 2020 patch out for the Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy Note 9

Samsung is rolling out firmware version N960FXXS4DTA5 for the Galaxy Note 9 and N975FXXS2BTA7 for the Galaxy Note 10+. Both have been released only in Germany so far but it’s only a matter of time now before these updates are sent out in other markets. Samsung will soon release the update over-the-air, but you can already download it from our firmware section by clicking on the respective version number.

It’s safe to say that the updates don’t bring much in the way of new features to these devices. These are just routine security maintenance releases that Samsung releases every month to ensure that they’re all patched up and protected against any vulnerabilities.

Even Google hasn’t detailed the February 2020 security maintenance release as yet so it’s unclear exactly which vulnerabilities have been addressed. Samsung should post its own release notes in the coming days which will also highlight the vulnerabilities that have been addressed in Samsung’s own software.

Galaxy A41 to be powered by MediaTek Helio P65 processor

The Galaxy A41, one of the many 2020 A series phones Samsung is working on right now, has popped up on the Geekbench benchmark database. The benchmark reveals that the A41 is powered by a MediaTek processor, the Helio P65 to be precise. Samsung has partnered with MediaTek every now and then, and it seems the company is doing it again this year. Rumors also say Samsung could use MediaTek’s 5G chip on some of its 2020 Galaxy A smartphones, though that is likely to be reserved for higher-end devices.

The MediaTek Helio P65 has pretty good specs, such as two Cortex-A75 performance cores and six Cortex-A55 efficiency cores, but since it’s built on a 12nm process, it probably isn’t as efficient as the 10nm Exynos 9611 that we find on the Galaxy A51 (read our review here) and will see on upcoming devices like the Galaxy M31. The presence of the MediaTek chip on the Galaxy A41 suggests it could be an ODM device, which means it would be made in China by a third-party manufacturer instead of Samsung.

The benchmark reveals the A41 will have 4GB of RAM and run Android 10. Recently, the camera and battery specs for the device had been revealed as well. The A41 is said to have a 48-megapixel primary rear shooter along with a 2-megapixel macro shooter, and a 25MP camera for selfies; it’s unknown how many cameras it will have at the back in total. The battery capacity has more or less been confirmed to be 3,500 mAh, a sizable jump over the 3,100 mAh battery that powers the Galaxy A40.

Samsung bets on 5G to improve its fortunes in 2020

Samsung was among the few companies that launched 5G smartphones in 2019. It ended up shipping 6.7 million 5G phones last year even though there were only a handful of 5G-compatible models in its entire lineup.

The company sees great potential for growth in 5G and it’s counting on that to improve its fortunes this year. Samsung is in the unique position of benefiting both from the widespread consumer adoption of 5G smartphones and mobile carriers’ shift to 5G networks as it also provides network solutions.

5G will be a key growth area for Samsung in 2020

Samsung pointed out in its Q4 2019 earnings release today that its revenues from the network business decreased compared to Q3 2019 because 5G adoption in South Korea was concentrated in the first half of the year. It was actually the first country to launch commercial 5G networks and Samsung’s 5G equipment played a significant role in enabling local carriers to launch their next-gen networks.

However, it did see 5G revenue increasing in overseas markets such as the United States and Japan. Samsung’s 5G network solutions have become more favorable as Huawei’s network business continues to be encircled by issues related to its alleged links to the Chinese government. The United States has actively been calling on its allies to shun Huawei’s equipment for their cellular networks. This has allowed Samsung to dominate the space.

Samsung rightly expects revenues from the 5G business to decline in South Korea as all major carriers have upgraded their networks already, but it’s going to expand its 5G network solutions in markets across the globe. With carriers in a lot more countries set to launch their 5G networks this year, there’s significant potential for growth in this industry for Samsung.

2020 will also see more 5G smartphones hit the market and Samsung’s chip business will cater to that by offering a wider variety of 5G SoCs. Samsung’s mobile business will launch more 5G smartphones this year, particularly in the mid-range segment, to maintain its lead as one of the top 5G smartphone vendors in the world.

Galaxy S10 5G gets Android 10 update on T-Mobile

The Galaxy S10 series was the first to get the Android 10 and One UI 2.0 update, but that doesn’t mean the rollout has been completed for all variants by all carriers. Owners of the Galaxy S10 5G in particular have had to wait longer than those who own any of the standard Galaxy S10 models. For T-Mobile users, that wait is finally coming to an end. The un-carrier has released the Android 10 update for the Galaxy S10 5G this week.

The update — software version G977TUVU3BSL5 — was released on January 27 and should be available for all Galaxy S10 5G owners on T-Mobile by now. You can check if that’s the case for your device from the Settings » Software update menu on the phone. You can also update your phone by flashing the full Android 10 firmware on it using a Windows PC. You can find that firmware in our firmware archive.

The Android 10 update brings a number of new features, such as a choice of Google and Samsung navigation gestures, a native system-wide screen recorder, improved camera Pro mode controls, improved facial recognition, enhanced Digital Wellbeing with parental controls and Focus mode, and more. Dark mode (previously Night mode) can now darken your wallpaper, and there are also many other improvements to the user interface that you can check out at this link.

Rumor: Galaxy Z Flip will give you last year’s camera for 1500 euros

It’s been repeatedly mentioned in all the Galaxy Z Flip leaks that Samsung’s new foldable phone will use the Snapdragon 855 processor from last year. The most recent leak suggests it will be the Snapdragon 855+, but the point remains: The Galaxy Z Flip will not have the latest and greatest internals.

And while the Galaxy Z Flip is also expected to miss out on the 108MP camera that we will see on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, it did seem like it would have the upgraded 12MP main camera that the Galaxy S20 and S20+ will be equipped with. However, according to a Twitter leakster, that won’t be the case and the Galaxy Z Flip will use the Dual Aperture 12MP camera that we saw on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 have an excellent primary rear shooter, one that has been in use since the Galaxy S9 came out. But if the Galaxy Z Flip does not have the new camera from the Galaxy S20 series, then that’s another specification that will technically be outdated on Samsung’s second foldable phone, which could make the rumored 1500 euros price an even harder pill to swallow for some folks.

At this time, no one knows what the aperture of the 12MP primary rear camera on the Galaxy S20 and S20+ will be, but rumor has it that Samsung has ditched its Dual Aperture technology for its new flagship. The Dual Aperture tech allows the camera to switch between apertures of F1.5 and F2.4 depending on lighting conditions, but with the upgraded Galaxy S20 camera expected to have a larger pixel size, it seems Samsung doesn’t deem its Dual Aperture tech to be necessary anymore.

Alas, as solid and frequent as the rumors and leaks might be getting, only Samsung will be able to tell us how it is improving the cameras for its 2020 Galaxy S lineup and whether the Galaxy Z Flip actually uses an older (but still extremely capable) camera sensor. And all will be revealed soon enough: The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip will be unveiled in February 11 in San Francisco, USA.

Huawei nova 7i is coming on February 14

Huawei has announced that it will launch a new smartphone called nova 7i on February 14 in Malaysia. However, this isn't really a new smartphone and is actually a re-branded nova 6 SE that was unveiled in China earlier last month. The Huawei nova 7i will have a Kirin 810 SoC at the helm with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. It will run Android 10-based EMUI 10 out of the box, but due to the US ban, it will not ship with Google's services. The nova 7i will sport a 6.4" FHD+ LCD with a punch hole in the upper-left corner for the 16MP selfie camera. Around the back, it will have a quad camera...

One way Samsung will benefit from being first to enter foldables market

Samsung’s launch of its first commercial foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, was turbulent. The company overlooked an important aspect of the Fold’s design and had to delay the device’s release for nearly six months. Many believe the design oversight happened because Samsung simply wanted to be first with a foldable device on the market, and they have a point. But being first to market does have its benefits, as the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip will prove.

If the rumors are to be believed (and at this point, they can be), the Galaxy Z Flip’s foldable screen will have an ultra-thin layer of glass on top. The other clamshell foldable phone that’s launching this year, the Motorola Razr, won’t. Just like Samsung, Motorola is making sure people know that the Razr will have to be handled with care. And while that is going to be general advice for any foldable phone in the first few years, Samsung does have an advantage here.

Since Samsung has been working on foldable phones for a longer time, the folding screen on its second foldable phone won’t be as fragile as the screen on the Galaxy Fold or Motorola’s upcoming Razr. The Razr is Motorola’s first attempt at a foldable phone, and, as a result, it has exactly the same disadvantage the Fold had last year: The foldable screen, which is made of plastic, has no glass layer on top for protection.

The Razr is also priced very expensively for its spec sheet, but that’s another discussion altogether. The point I’m trying to make is that in early 2020, the foldable phone from Samsung will be more resilient than the one Motorola will sell to its customers. That wouldn’t be possible if Samsung hadn’t decided to go all in on the foldable segment before anyone else.

Sure, the company could have decided to hold off on launching a product in the market until it had the ability to put glass on top of a foldable screen, but the same could be said about Motorola. However, that’s not how it works. Every new product category has to start somewhere, and the early adopters always have to accept some risks and compromises.

In the case of the Galaxy Fold and the new Razr phone from Motorola, it’s a folding display that you have to be extremely careful with. And, for the next couple of years, those who buy a foldable device will also be paying a pretty high price even though these foldable devices have the same specs as standard non-folding smartphones.

But thanks to its persistence, Samsung will have solved — to some degree — a major issue of foldable screens before anyone else. And I can’t help but feel that’s a pretty big advantage. The Razr will probably see a lot more demand as it carries an iconic design, but for anyone looking for a foldable phone with a flip phone form factor, the Galaxy Z Flip’s glass-equipped folding display makes it a more sensible option.

Samsung hints at more foldable devices for 2020

Samsung announced its quarterly results for the last three months of 2019 today, and in the report, the company has hinted that it will be launching multiple foldable smartphones in 2020. The Galaxy Z Flip will clearly be the first of them, and while Samsung doesn’t go into any details, it is clearly suggesting that the Z Flip is not the only foldable phone it will bring to market this year.

And that shouldn’t come as a surprise. We already expect Samsung to release the successor to the Galaxy Fold in the second half of the year, though details on that device are pretty scarce at the moment. However, there have been reports that the Galaxy Fold 2 (or whatever Samsung calls it) will support the S Pen and have an 8-inch folding display. The foldable display will likely have ultra-thin glass on top, which would make S Pen support possible and also make the display less prone to damage compared to the Galaxy Fold’s display.

Other specs can be expected to be similar to what the Galaxy S20 series will bring, like a 108MP camera, the latest Snapdragon and Exynos chipsets, and 5G support (possibly as standard in every country). Of course, it’s too early to say exactly how Samsung’s next foldable device will turn out to be, but it’s good to see the company offering some confirmation that it’s working on more foldable devices for launch after the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip.

Samsung profits decline 53% in 2019, improvement likely this year

The earnings estimate that Samsung released three weeks ago for the fourth quarter of last year showed that the company’s 2019 full-year profit would decline a whopping 53 percent compared to 2018. That was confirmed today when Samsung published its full earnings report for Q4 2019 and the fiscal year 2019.

Samsung reported revenues of 230.40 trillion won ($193.7 billion) in 2019 compared to 243.77 trillion won ($221.6 billion) in 2018. Its operating profits for the year 2019 total 27.77 trillion won ($23.2 billion), a steep 53 percent decline compared to the 58.89 trillion on ($50.4 billion) in profit that it earned in 2018.

Total profit for 2019 is down 53 percent compared to 2018

Samsung’s Q4 2019 earnings remained almost flat compared to Q4 2018 as the company posted revenues of 59.9 trillion won ($50.7 billion), just 1 percent above the same period last year. Its operating profit for Q4 2019 came in at 7.1 trillion won ($6 billion), a solid 34 percent slide compared to Q4 2018.

It became evident in the first quarter of 2019 that it would be a tough year for Samsung. The company went on to post its lowest quarterly profit in three years after a blockbuster 2018. Its revenues and profits took a hit largely due to the supply glut in the semiconductor market. Its NAND flash and DRAM products had made an insane amount of money in the year before. Prices fell sharply when supply outweighed demand and it has taken over a year for some stability to return to the market. However, it left a significant dent on Samsung’s balance sheet.

The company highlights in its Q4 2019 earnings report that profit for the quarter fell because of the continued decline in memory chip prices as well as low demand for display panels. What helped this quarter were the solid sales of flagship smartphones and improved demand for memory chips meant for mobiles and servers.

Samsung’s mobile business brought in higher quarterly earnings because of the strong sales of flagship Galaxy smartphones in the fourth quarter as well as improved profit margins on mass-market models like the Galaxy A series. Operating profit did fall compared to Q3 2019 because the effect from the Galaxy Note 10’s launch had faded by then.

Samsung is cautiously optimistic about things improving in 2020. It continues to expect weak sales for memory chips, OLED panels and consumer electronics due to seasonality. Profit from the mobile business is expected to remain steady because new flagship and foldable models will be launched but it does caution that increased marketing costs will keep margins in check.

Conditions in the memory market are expected to improve gradually due to rising demand from data center companies and higher 5G smartphone adoption. It expects inventory to return to levels seen in previous years in the next few months which should result in prices recovering. Samsung will also be focusing on a transition to next-gen 1Z-nm DRAM and 6th Gen V-NAND chip production.

Samsung maintained crown of largest smartphone vendor in 2019

2019 was a good year for Samsung, at least as far as ensuring it didn’t see its smartphone sales go on a downward trajectory is concerned. According to the latest data from Strategy Analytics, Samsung maintained its status as the world’s largest smartphone vendor in 2019. The company shipped 295.1 million phones over the entire year and claimed 20.9 percent market share. At the end of 2018, those figures stood at 291.3 million and 20.3 percent respectively.

It was only in the fourth quarter that Samsung was overtaken by Apple, with the latter seeing strong iPhone 11 sales, especially in Asia and North America. Samsung’s sales dipped by 1 percent in Q4 2019 compared to Q4 2018, though its market share during that period remained the same at 18 percent. Overall, Samsung was able to maintain its lead on the back of good performance across all price segments, although it’s an entirely different story as far as its revenue and profits are concerned.

Huawei, Samsung’s strongest competitor in total smartphone shipments, gained some ground to get closer to its Korean rival. In fact, Huawei had solid growth, going from 14.4 percent market share in 2018 to 17 percent in 2019. That said, Huawei is expected to have troubles maintaining that growth because of pressure from its homegrown rivals, and possibly because of the continued pressure on the company from the Trump administration.

February 2020 security patch released for the Galaxy Tab S3

In 2019, Samsung often released new Android security patches for its devices earlier than everyone else, including Google, and it seems determined to keep doing it this year as well. In Korea, Samsung is pushing out an update to the Galaxy Tab S3 that bundles the February 2020 security patch, two days before February actually begins.

The update comes with software version T825N0KOU3CTA1 for the LTE model of the tablet; the software version suggests the update includes more than just enhanced security, but we’re unable to say what that might be at this time. It probably doesn’t bring any new features, as the Galaxy Tab S3 has been on the market for nearly three years. Even security updates do not come out for the tablet regularly, only when necessary.

It remains to be seen if the February security patch will also be coming to the Galaxy Tab S3 in other markets soon, but for now, Korean users of the tablet can download the update over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on the device. They can also install the update by downloading the latest firmware from our firmware archive and flashing it on the tablet using a Windows computer.

Stable Galaxy S9 Android 10 update rolling out to beta users

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ Android 10 beta program has finally ended. Samsung is rolling out the final Android 10 build to those who participated in the beta program. The update that has been released for beta users has the same firmware version as the update that rolled out to Android Pie users earlier this week – G96*FXXU7DTAA.

We can confirm that the update is rolling out in India, but it should also be available in other countries where Samsung carried out beta tests, such as the UK and South Korea. In India, those who weren’t part of the beta program can now download the Android 10 update as well. The update comes with the January 2020 security patch, which was also released as part of a regular security update in some markets earlier this month.

With both Android 10 beta and Android Pie users now getting Android 10 on their Galaxy S9 and S9+, all of Samsung’s eligible flagship smartphones have been updated to the latest version of Android and One UI. Naturally, it will take some time for the Galaxy S9 update to reach all countries, though we should see availability of the update expand quickly now that the initial release has taken place.

If you’re running the Android 10 beta on your Galaxy S9 or S9+, you can download the stable build by opening the Settings app on the phone, selecting Software update, then tapping Download and install.

Galaxy Buds have received a new firmware update

Three months after the last firmware update was released for the Galaxy Buds, Samsung is rolling out a new update for its wireless earbuds today. As expected, it’s a minor update that only system stability and reliability improvements.

Samsung improved the stability of the Bluetooth connection in the previous update. It really did help make the connection more stable. This latest update further improves upon that.

Galaxy Buds receive a new firmware update

Samsung has already released a couple of Bluetooth-related updates so far for the Galaxy Buds. It has done a good job of improving the user experience of the device and as it now gears up to launch the Galaxy Buds+, it’s making sure that the original wireless earbuds are looked after as well.

Firmware version R170XXU0ATA2 is now rolling out for the Galaxy Buds. The changelog doesn’t reveal much beyond saying that there’s “improved system stability and reliability.” Some more information about this update has been provided on Samsung Korea’s official forums. The update addresses an errant beep sound when muting/unmuting a phone call and also works out some kinks with the connection process.

The latest Galaxy Buds update can be downloaded right away by first pairing the device with a compatible smartphone and then installing the update through the Galaxy Wearable app.
